Be the writer/journalist for a new international climate policy:
The Global Climate Reward (GCR) is a non-profit organisation with supporters from around the world, including Australia, Europe and United States. It was formed to develop and demonstrate a new international climate policy with the goal of addressing the Paris Climate Agreement. The GCR policy was developed over the past 8 years, resulting in academic publications, a clear policy design, and a team expert advisors. The tough work of developing the GCR policy has been fruitful, and the project is now entering a new phase.

Policy Background
The GCR policy is a key part of a cli-fi novel describing the near future, called “The Ministry for the Future”. The novel was one of Barak Obama’s favourite books in 2020, and the novel has been discussed at COP26, Davos 2022, leading universities, and in the mainstream media. The successful candidate will be helping to develop the “real life” application of this policy.

Position Description:
The writer/journalist will work at times that are flexible and mutually convenient, but with the aim of producing a monthly newsletter on a regular cycle. The position is estimated to involve about 10-20 hours per month to interview the GCR team, do some background research, and write the monthly newsletter. Ideally, the successful application will continue in the writer/journalist position for a period of 12 months without pay, or until the funds can be found to pay casual rates if the writer/journalist produces good work and wishes to transition into a more permanent role (this depends on project funding).

The primary task will be to interview GCR team members and undertake online research to write short interesting stories for the GCR newsletter. The writer/journalist will be shown how to use MailChimp, how to manage the subscriber database, and how to ensure that each Newsletter is error free and presentable. The work will include graphic layout and sourcing images and photographs for the newsletter.

The writer/journalist will be required to take responsibility for the editing, assembling and distribution of the monthly newsletter after an initial training period. Support will be provided for copy reviews and solving technical problems. The role may expand to other social media (Twitter, LinkedIn) as the writer/journalist gains confidence.

Qualifications:
There are no specific qualifications required, however the applicant is required to be fluent in written and spoken English. We are seeking applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds, and locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Organise occasional meetings to interview the GCR team
  • Write one GCR newsletter per month
  • Maintain situational awareness of climate change and the GCR policy
  • Help building partnerships with other organisations

Requirements:

  • Strong interest in climate change and sustainability
  • Ability to work for 10-20 hours per month (flexible hours)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, and attention to detail

Advantageous:

  • Interest in journalism and social media
  • Qualifications in any field (i.e. this is an interdisciplinary project)
  • Digital media and computer skills
